What is Modern Slavery?
Modern slavery occurs when individuals are exploited for personal or commercial gain, resulting in the loss of their freedom. Victims may be tricked, coerced, or forced into situations where they cannot escape exploitation. Modern slavery includes, but is not limited to:
- Human Trafficking: Moving individuals for the purpose of exploitation.
- Forced Labour: Compelling individuals to work under threat or coercion.
- Debt Bondage: Forcing individuals to work to repay debts under unfair terms.
Modern slavery is pervasive, even in developed countries like the UK, and often operates in hidden and insidious ways.
Global Statistics on Modern Slavery (2022 global estimates, measuring 2021)
According to the 2022 Global Estimates of Modern Slavery from Walk Free, the International Labour Organization, and the International Organization for Migration:
- ~50 million people are in modern slavery worldwide (forced labour and forced marriage).
- About one in four victims are children (~12 million).
- ~22 million are in forced marriage (many were married as children).
- ~28 million are in forced labour, including:
- ~17.3 million in private-economy forced labour.
- ~6.3 million in commercial sexual exploitation.
- ~3.9 million in state-imposed forced labour.
- Vulnerable groups (e.g., migrant workers) face heightened risk.
- The COVID-19 period increased vulnerabilities such as poverty and job insecurity.
Modern slavery is a pressing global issue requiring attention and action at all levels of society, including businesses.
In this part of the course, we will explore the impact of modern slavery and how you can prevent it from finding its way into your supply chain.
